Cinnamon is considered to be one of the first traded spices in the ancient world. It was considered so valuable during this time. Cinnamon is now the second most popular spice, after black pepper, in the United States and Europe.

The cinnamon tree originally grew wild on the island of Sri Lanka.

Ceylon Cinnamon also known as True cinnamon is native to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has been and continues to be, the major supplier of true cinnamon to the world for over a millennium.

Ceylon cinnamon comes from the bark of cinnamon trees. The cinnamon sticks are made using the inner barks of the Cinnamomum tree which are dried until they curl into rolls. Ceylon cinnamon is categorized into four major grades and the most expensive is “Alba” with a 6 mm diameter. As a spice, cinnamon is available in powder form or whole, as pieces of bark. People can also use cinnamon essential oil and supplements.

True Taste of Ceylon cinnamon

As for the taste, Sri Lankan cinnamon is sweeter than cassia cinnamon and it has remarkable features like its color, flavor and aroma because of the particular soil and climatic conditions which is extremely unique to the country.

On the other hand, Ceylon cinnamon sticks are lighter in color, very brittle and made of thin, densely packed layers. It’s also milder, with a citrus-like quality. The bark is dried and can be ground or used in stick form to add sweetness and warmth to a wide variety of foods. It can be used in desserts, sweet treats such as bread, cookies and pies, and drinks such as tea, cider, hot cocoa and coffee. It is a wonderful complement to meats such as beef, pork, chicken or lamb.

Health benefits of cinnamon

Scientists have found evidence of some possible health benefits of cinnamon. Some studies have suggested that the compounds in cinnamon have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties, and that they might offer protection from cancer and cardiovascular disease, among other conditions.

EU’s recognition with first-ever GI certification

Sri Lanka achieves its first ever GI CERTIFICATION with Ceylon Cinnamon. Marking a moment of historical significance, Sri Lanka received its first ever Geographical Indication (GI) certification when the European Union (EU) Commission on 02 February, 2022 granted GI status to Ceylon Cinnamon.
