Sri Lankan Cardamom

Cardamom is a pod spice that comes from the seeds of various plants in the ginger family and is considered to be one of the world’s oldest spices. The history of cardamom is long, dating back at least 4000 years. Cardamom originally came from wild plants located in the Western Ghats in Southern India. Named as the ‘Queen of Spices,’ cardamom is one of the most expensive spices on the planet. Cardamom has a very unique and complex flavor. The taste is also strong, some say it tastes like a combination of ginger and cinnamon.

Cardamom in Sri Lanka is grown in the districts of Matale, Kandy, Ratnapura,  Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya and  Galle. Cardamom in Sri Lanka is widely used, in giving an aroma and taste to rice, meat curry, desserts or tea. Today, Sri Lanka is one of the largest commercial producers of Cardamom.
